Work Packages
The BIOGEMSE project is structured into 10 interconnected work packages, each focusing on a specific dimension of the project to ensure a holistic and coordinated approach.
Our Work Packages include:
- Project coordination and innovation management
- Defining bio-inspired product requirements and living lab specifications
- Developing biomimetic product designs through computational and generative methods
- Advancing construction biologisation via cutting-edge additive manufacturing
- Implementing digital tools for data-driven optimisation
Further work packages address the deployment, testing, and validation of living labs, the scaling up of processes for bio-intelligent functional products manufacturing, and dedicated efforts to maximise the uptake and impact of BIOGEMSE results.
Work Packages
Work Package 1
Project Coordination and Innovation Management I
WP1 ensures the effective overall management of the BIOGEMSE project, including compliance with European Commission requirements, coordination among partners, and communication with the EC. It oversees progress according to the work plan, implements quality assurance and risk management procedures, ensures ethical compliance, and provides strategic guidance to achieve the project’s objectives.
Work Package 2
Bio-inspired product requirements definition and living labs specifications
WP2 defines common requirements and specifications for SLLs and bio-intelligent products, sets the reference architecture and standardised digital protocols, and establishes Design Principles, Actions, and Indicators for safety, sustainability, and circularity assessment.
Work Package 3
Biomimicking product designs empowered by computational analysis and generative approaches
WP3 advances safety and sustainability evaluation of bio-based materials and products using the SSbD framework, defines KPIs via MCDS tools, and develops multi-scale models and computational workflows for generative design in additive manufacturing, enabling optimized, modular, and bio-inspired bio-intelligent products.
Work Package 4
Construction biologisation through advanced AM techniques
WP4 extends the use of bio-based materials in construction by optimizing AM processability, enhancing 3D printing versatility with advanced 2K printing and monitoring systems, providing virtual manufacturing support, and enabling intelligent, zero-defect production through adaptive, learning processes.
Work Package 5
Digital tools and data-driven optimisation strategies
WP5 develops a cloud-based platform for interoperable data sharing, establishes IoT edge-to-cloud connectivity, creates AAS-based digital twins for AM processes and products, and implements a digital product passport for comprehensive lifecycle tracking.
Work Package 6
Scaled up processes for bio-intelligent functional products manufacturing
WP6 integrates and scales up BIOGEMSE technologies (WP3–5) for industrial production, applies generative design for large-scale bio-inspired construction products, validates bio-intelligent products in production (TRL5/6), implements the SSbD framework, and enhances 3D printing performance, productivity, and reliability for industrial adoption.
Work Package 7
Living labs deployment, testing and validation
WP7 commissions and validates BIOGEMSE bio-intelligent products at SLLs (TRL6), collects real-world data to support digital solutions and future designs, derives lessons for sector-wide replication, and finalizes SSbD assessment with real-world data.
Work Package 8
Boosting BIOGEMSE results uptake I
WP8 raises awareness of the project, ensures effective use of results through IP strategies and sustainable business models, shares knowledge via training for skills development, and promotes broader technology adoption aligned with existing standards.
Work Package 9
Boosting BIOGEMSE results uptake II
WP9 builds on the activities of WP8 during RP2, extending efforts to raise awareness, share knowledge, and maximize the impact of BIOGEMSE results. It continues to implement IP strategies and sustainable business models, provides advanced training and skill development, and fosters broader adoption of the technologies by aligning outcomes with updated standards and stakeholder needs, ensuring long-term uptake and sectoral impact.
Work Package 10
Project Coordination and Innovation Management II
WP10 continues the management activities of WP1 during RP2, ensuring effective coordination among partners, compliance with European Commission requirements, and strategic oversight of project progress. It maintains quality assurance, risk management, and ethical monitoring, while supporting smooth communication with the EC and guiding the project toward achieving its objectives in the second reporting period.
